Brogan shoes are a type of ankle-high boot that was made popular during the 1700s and 1800s. They are especially known for being worn by the working class, and are generally characterized as being heavy, sturdy, and durable. Being a type of an oxford shoe, they are made of leather and have enclosed lacing. The term “brogan” is thought to be derived from the word bróg, which means “shoe” in Gaelic.

The basic brogan shoe is usually very plain in design. Often, they are made of leather or other flexible material. They have a heavy and durable heel that is intended to last through the wear and tear of long wear. Brogan shoes have lacing up the front, like an oxford shoe, that keep them secured to the wearer’s feet.

Soldiers began wearing brogan shoes during the American Revolution in the late 1700s. They were originally worn by members of the British Army. By the time the American Civil War was taking place, most soldiers were known to wear brogan shoes as a part of their standard uniforms.

More often than not, these shoes would be a neutral shape and able to be worn on either the left or right foot. This would allow for the person wearing them to even out the wear and tear of daily use, increasing the lifespan of the shoe. A popular style of the brogan shoe was the Model 1859 Jefferson. It had a squared-off toe, as well as a standard four eyelets for the leather laces to pass through.

Along with being popular among foot soldiers, their sturdy build made brogan shoes an obvious choice for those in the working class who needed a durable ankle boot to get them through their day. The heavy soles on the shoes were ideal for long hours in the factories, especially during the peak of the Industrial Revolution. They were seen as a working person’s shoe, so the term “brogan” as well as the brogan shoe took a lowly connotation.

In recent times, the term brogan shoe generally means any sturdy work shoe. Many higher-end fashion designers have incorporated versions of the brogan shoe into their collections. Stylish brogues made of various leathers, such as alligator or ostrich, have been seen on the runway of many high-fashion collections even though their use and design is far from the original brogan shoe.

Brogan shoes were the type of hard-wearing shoes supplied by slave owners to their slaves on the plantation. There tended to be little variation between the male and female versions and, at least on the larger plantations, were made in house. That is to say, the materials came from livestock slaughtered on the plantation, the hide of which was tanned in the plantation tanning house, and then shoes were then made by one or more slaves to whom the task was assigned on a regular periodic basis.

The shoes were handed out to the slaves together with clothing (also homemade from cotton or wool produced and spun on the plantation) once or twice a year, usually at the start of the spring or autumn.

The term “well-heeled” is an American expression that dates back to the mid-1800s. As town cobblers made and repaired shoes, those who could afford the repair service and/or new shoes were considered well-heeled. Well-heeled is the opposite of the American expression “down at the heels” used in the seventeenth century. The heels on the shoes of the poor were often worn down and differed from those of the rich who were able to maintain their shoes or afford new shoes, while the poor could not.

Many people in the United States in the early 1800s went without shoes during the spring and summer and many others wore shoes only on special occasions such as church or school. Some children never even owned shoes until they were teenagers. By the mid-1800s shoe making became more industrialized and wearing shoes year round became more common.

Plimsolls were the first American rubber soled shoes and were made in the United States in the late 1800s. Humphrey O’Sullivan, an Irish-American, invented the rubber shoe heel and had it patented in 1899. Rubber soled shoes were promoted as “sneakers” by advertising agent Henry Nelson McKinney to accentuate the benefit of a quiet shoe as opposed to the usual noisy shoe.

Throughout the centuries, the expression well-heeled became more and more associated with the wealthy, the rich, and the concept of luxury. Well-heeled today means a person with the financial means to afford good quality shoes. Those with high earnings or high incomes can afford to be well-heeled in a variety of well-made shoes, so quantity as well as quality of shoes is often expressed by the term well-heeled.

Designer shoes, with their extravagant price tags, are marketed to the well-heeled shopper. Brands such as Gucci, Manolo Blahnik, and Prada start at about $400 for the most casual shoe and boots could cost up to $2,000 or more. Celebrities and the wealthy can afford the luxury, but designer shoes are out of range for the middle classes and below.

However, with the wide variety of inexpensive yet stylish shoes available today, most people can afford decent-looking shoes. Shoes are considered important to a person’s image and job seekers are often encouraged by experts to be sure to have well-maintained, work-appropriate shoes. Second hand stores are often a good source for those who are not well-heeled financially, if the shoes are in good condition and just need a little polishing to make them look new.

There are a few different ways you can become a shoe cobbler, depending on factors such as your finances, and the availability of work in your area. Some colleges and vocational schools have shoe repair or design programs, while others offer that type of training through their fashion design departments. If you can find a college or vocational school that offers a program in cobbling or cordwaining, that is one way to learn all of the necessary skills. The other way to become a shoe cobbler is to find an experienced cobbler to work for as an apprentice. If you are able to locate that type of position, you should be able to receive on-the-job training.

Cobblers are skilled craftsmen who have historically been responsible for repairing, and maintaining shoes. They use a variety of tools and machines to perform functions such as resoling, patching, stretching, and fitting. Many types of commercially produced shoes cannot be repaired, or else are not worth repairing, but there is still a demand for the services of cobblers in the modern world. In addition to traditional repairs and modifications, modern cobbler shops often provide other related services such as shoe shining.

There is no one career path you must follow to become a shoe cobbler, though there are some options you may want to consider. If you have the financial means to attend a college or vocational school, and you can locate one with an appropriate program of study, then that is one way to get a job as a shoe cobbler. Schools that offer training in cobbling and cordwaining sometimes have separate shoemaking departments, while others have classes or programs within a general fashion design department. This is typically the best path to choose if you think you may want to be a shoe designer, or cordwainer, in addition to a skilled cobbler.

Colleges and vocational schools can provide you with valuable knowledge and experience, but obtaining that type of higher education is not strictly necessary. Another way to become a shoe cobbler is to simply go to work at a shoe repair shop. Some cobblers require their employees to have a high school education, while others are more concerned with work ethics than diplomas. When looking for a job at a cobbler’s store, it is important to let any potential employers know that you are interested in learning the trade. That may help you find a cobbler who will be willing to train you on the job as an apprentice.

Shoes squeak for a number of different reasons, and the first thing you should do when looking to fix the problem is to try to isolate where the squeak is coming from. If your shoes have a removable inner sole, friction between that area and the hard body may be the culprit; a crack in the shoe bed may also be to blame. Both of these issues can usually be fixed with a few household items and a bit of time. Sometimes you yourself may be causing the sound if you frequently wear your shoes with bare feet. In this case, wearing socks or lightly dusting your toes and arches with talcum powder may be the easiest solution. If the squeaky shoes are really bad, you may need a professional to repair to the shoe’s inner structure, which is hard if not impossible to do without specialized equipment.

Try to Identify the Cause

Figuring out why your shoes sound funny can be difficult, but the task is often a bit easier if you think about when the noise occurs the most. If you notice it more on hardwood floors than carpet, it may be a friction issue; if it’s usually only in the summer or when you’re going sockless, it may be a sweat or moisture problem. Squeaks that only happen when the shoes are wet may be a sign of a loose sole or a material that stretches differently when moist, causing cracks that air bubbles can get trapped in.

It’s also usually a good idea to take a good look at your shoes. Turn them over in your hands and look at the way the soles are connected to the foot beds, and stick your hand inside to observe how tightly the liner fits. This will help you spot any problem areas, loose connections, or cracks, which can make the source of the squeak easier to narrow down.

Reduce Friction

If your shoe has a removable liner or inner sole, try taking it out and dusting corn starch, talcum, or baby powder along the bottom of the shoe, then replace the liner making sure the fit is snug. These powders are known for absorbing moisture and may also reduce any friction that happens when the sole and liner rub against each other when you walk. This method may not work if the inner sole is glued down, but if that is the case internal friction is probably not your problem.

You may also hear a squeak if the body of the shoe stretches during wear to the point that it no longer fits securely on the sole. This is most common with shoes made of leather. Leather has a tendency to stretch and shrink in response to weather conditions and temperatures, and shoes that aren’t designed to anticipate and adapt to these changes may show it in the sounds they make. Applying a bit of shoe oil or mild vegetable oil to the seams of these sorts of shoes may help, though it’s often a good idea to be very sparing at first. Too much oil can stain the shoes or warp them, and any material other than leather, like canvas, should probably be spot-tested first so you don’t accidentally ruin or discolor the material. Footwear that doesn’t make noise but looks bad may not be the solution you’re going for.

Fix Cracks and Loose Soles

Squeaky shoes may also happen if part of the heel or sole is not fully attached to the rest of the shoe, and remedying this may be as easy as simply gluing or otherwise re-sealing things. Strong adhesives designed for rubber and leather are often the best options, but maximum strength craft or multipurpose glue might also work. It’s also important to look for loose attachments like tassels or heel plates and correct anything that seems out of place or weak.

Experiment With Socks

If you frequently wear your shoes with bare feet, your solution may be as simple as wearing socks. In these cases it isn’t usually the shoe itself that’s squeaking; the noise is actually caused by the way your foot is rubbing against the bed as you walk or run. Socks can add bulk, which may reduce friction, and they will also absorb moisture and sweat that can cause the skin to slide and squeak. Lightly dusting the feet with talcum powder might also work, and may be the best option for sandals or other footwear that wouldn’t look right with socks.

Get a Professional Opinion

Sometimes shoes squeak for no other reason than that they are poorly made. Problems with the internal structure of the shoe can’t always be seen or fixed on the outside. If this is the case and you notice it soon enough, your best bet may be to return the shoes to the store where you purchased them.

Most stores won’t accept merchandise for return that has been extensively worn or used, though. In these situations, you may need to get the advice of a professional shoe repairer. Cobblers often have ways of silencing squeaks that are more involved than anything you could do at home. Depending on how extensive the problem is, these services can be quite expensive.

There are many different types of shoes. Each type has its own set of features, benefits and personal advantages; however, with these positive elements can come negative ones as well. After all, not every shoe type is perfect for every type of person. With endless types, colors and styles of shoes to choose from, finding the perfect pair of shoes can be a daunting task.

To understand the basic types of shoes that are available on the retail market today, it is important to understand the purpose of footwear in general. Footwear, or shoes, are items that are worn for three basic reasons: decoration, support and protection, although not all shoes serve every purpose at once. In fact, some different are made with only one purpose in mind.

The first known shoes were made to protect the feet while walking. These shoes were made over 10,000 years ago and they were a type that is referred to as a sandal. These shoes did not offer the same levels of support or protection that some types of shoes offer today.

Some types of shoes are made for all ages and genders. The tennis shoe is one of the most basic of shoe types. This shoe is made to support the foot during physical activities. There are different types of tennis shoes for particular activities or sports.

Tennis shoes are used by men, women and children of all ages. There are tennis shoes for athletes and casual exercisers. Some types of tennis shoes are made with various age groups in mind. There are tennis shoes that are made with soft souls for children who are learning how to walk; there are also shoes for the elderly that offer the additional foot support that is often needed with age.

Another type of shoe that is made for all ages and genders are flip flops. In some societies, flip flops are also referred to as thongs. These shoes are ideal for warm weather climates and summer days. Regular flip flops do not offer a large amount of support; however, specialized flip flops can be made to offer support and protection for people and situations that require it.

Hiking boots are another versatile type of shoe that can be found in men’s, women’s and children’s footwear stores. Hiking boots are strong and durable shoes that cover the entire foot and part of the ankle. They offer protection from the environment and support for the sole of a person’s foot. Hiking boots are popular with outdoor enthusiasts and people who live in certain parts of the country.

The term sneakers can refer to many forms of athletic shoes with rubber soles. It may not apply specifically to certain types of athletic shoes that are designed for some applications. For instance soccer or football shoes might be called cleats instead, and some people make a distinction between sneakers and cross-trainers or running shoes. Others call most athletic shoes with rubber bottoms sneakers, daps, gym shoes, tennies, sport shoes or additional other names.

A common question about sneakers is how they got their name. When they were first mass-marketed by the Keds® company in the early 1900s, an advertising agent came up with the common title. Henry Nelson McKinney called these rubber bottom shoes sneakers because they made little noise on hard surfaces, and a person could sneak up on someone else without having his shoes heard. At the time, most shoes had hard soles and so the difference between the sound of soft-soled shoes and other shoes with hard soles must have been quite noticeable.

Keds should not be viewed as the first company to make rubber bottomed shoes. In the 1830s, plimsolls became a common beach shoe in England, and their design was taken by Keds® in the 1900s. Plimsoll may refer to a specific type of sneaker that typically features a line in the rubber right below the canvas. This line could be used to determine if feet would get wet. Standing in ocean water above the line meant that a person would have wet feet. Not all sneakers have this line, and therefore plimsolls may be placed in a category of their own, though they also may be called Keds, even if not manufactured by the company.

It may be difficult to tell what is meant by sneakers because there are so many varieties. Kids taking rigorous gym classes might be asked to provide these shoes for school, and shoe choice should be more adapted for things like running and jogging, and feature some arch support and cushioning. Plenty of semi-athletic shoes don’t have much support and really aren’t designed for more than casual walking or daywear. Keds types and brands like Converse® may not be suited to extensive activity.

Price range on sneakers is also significant with very inexpensive pairs less than $20 US Dollars (USD) and some brand names costing well over $100 USD. Greater price doesn’t necessarily mean a higher quality athletic shoe. Some shoes are made more for appearance than they are for any athletic purpose.

You will need to first decide what kind of hiking you will primarily be doing before you can choose the best hiking shoes. Some people will be better off with lightweight hiking shoes meant for day hikes, while others may need a more rugged boot for multi-day hikes through varying terrain and conditions. Still others may require mountaineering boots, which are extremely heavy-duty, rigid, and designed to be used with crampons. Once you have decided what kind of hiking you prefer, it is time to choose hiking shoes that will suit your needs and your budget.

Regardless of the hiking shoes you choose, you must ensure that they fit snugly but not uncomfortably. Shoes that are too lose can lead to hot spots and blisters, and shoes that are too tight can adversely affect the muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and bones in the foot. Remember that most hiking shoes will require a break-in period, in which the shoes will feel too stiff and somewhat uncomfortable. This period will last several days or several weeks, depending on how often you wear the shoes to break them in. Never break in new hiking shoes while on a long hike, as this can lead to foot problems that may end the hike early.

The most common type of hiking shoes are leather hiking boots. These shoes tend to be heavier than other types of shoes, but they are durable, water-resistant, and rugged enough to handle multi-day hikes through various conditions. These boots do not breathe exceptionally well, so the hiker can expect his or her feet to get quite warm. If you plan on backpacking, in which you will be carrying a significant amount of weight in your backpack while you hike, these boots will be the best choice.

For day hikes and light overnight hikes, boots made from lightweight, synthetic materials may be the best choice. These boots will be breathable and comfortable, but not nearly as stiff as leather boots. Make sure the boots you choose have adequate ankle support and a rugged, heavy duty sole that will allow you to gain traction on loose terrain. The boots should be water resistant or waterproof, and they should be breathable to allow sweat from the foot to escape the boot, thereby keeping the foot warm and dry. Some people prefer low-cut hiking boots for added weight savings and comfort. While these are great for some purposes, remember that they do not offer a lot of ankle support and can be hazardous on difficult terrain.

Rubber Slippers, also known as thongs or flip-flops, rubber slippers are simple and fun footwear that is ideal for beaches and other casual settings. Popular all over the world, referring to the rubber flip-flops as rubber slippers is particularly common in Hawaii and other Polynesian settings. The slippers can be worn by people of any age or gender, making them one of the few truly universal forms of footwear on the market today.

Alt=Rubber Slippers

In construction, basic rubber slippers are very simple. The body of these rubber shoes is nothing more than the a comfortable sole; the foot rests on the sole, which is secured to the front area of the foot in one of two ways. The traditional design includes a simple band that spans the top of the foot in the area between the instep and the toes. Attached to this band is a small loop that fits neatly between the big and second toes. The heel of the slipper is left open, allowing it to flop as the individual walks.

While very similar to sandals, rubber slippers are considered a different type of footwear. The main difference between the two casual shoes is that sandals tend to encase more of the front of the foot, including the toes and the instep. In addition, there may or may not be the loop between the first two toes of the foot. Sandals may also lace up, rather than simply slide onto the foot in the manner that rubber slippers do.

Simple in design, the rubber slippers slide onto the foot with ease and can also be removed with equal ease. This makes them ideal for wearing while walking along the beach or around a pool area. The sole of the summer shoe protects the feet from direct contact with hot sand or concrete. At the same time, the shoes can be kicked off when it is time to dive into the water.

Flip-flops are also ideal for wearing around the house in warm weather, as they allow the feet to breathe with ease. Many people prefer to wear rubber slippers when shopping during the summer months, as they make the ideal footwear to go along with t-shirts and shorts. While it is frowned upon in many quarters, there are people who choose to wear socks along with the slippers. However, the vast majority of people prefer to wear flip-flops with no other type of foot covering present.

Along with being simple in design, Hawaiian rubber slippers are often available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Many manufacturers produce and sell the slippers for extremely low prices. This makes the summer footwear affordable for everyone, including people on tight budgets. The slippers can be purchased at many different types of retail stores, including drugstores, supermarkets, and discount retail stores.

Shoe makers are people who perform the traditional craft of designing and constructing shoes. The profession is generally conducted by hand using a variety of specialized tools. Footwear has been a necessary component to fully clothing humans for thousands of years. As such, the art changed and altered heavily over the years.

The different type of footwear produced by a shoe maker varies greatly on where the professional is located and what skills he or she has. Some examples of footwear include boots, clogs, sandals, moccasins or basic shoe designs. Traditionally, a shoe maker will use leather or wood to construct the shoe, while modern craftspeople have added rubber and plastic to the designs.

A shoe is divided into different sections, each of which is separately created and then assembled into a full piece. The base part of the shoe is known as the sole. It can be made from a number of harder elements and generally includes many layers of padding for added comfort. The upper portion of the shoe can be as simple as a small piece of leather or cloth in the case of a sandal or as elaborate as a piece that covers the full foot, ankle and more. Shoes and boots will also feature a piece known as a tongue that can be pulled and adjusted with laces or Velcro® for comfort and tightness.

A shoe maker will use a variety of different tools to help perfect the design of the shoe. The base item used is called a last. This is a piece of iron, wood or plastic that is shaped to resemble a person’s foot. Shoe makers will use this device to craft the shoe, placing the sole, upper and tongue together around the last and binding them into one piece. Lasts are designed in a variety of shapes and sizes to help the shoe maker better design the shoe for different people.

According to anthropologists, the earliest shoes have been found in Oregon, United States, and date from around 8000 BCE. The idea of actual shoe makers as a profession is assumed to have begun around 1000 BCE, as a greater understanding of the foot’s structure was established. Throughout the Middle Ages, the profession grew in popularity and status, finally becoming an integral part of society. Shoe makers were even awarded a patron saint in the form of Saint Crispin and became a subject of numerous popular culture stories throughout the years, including the story of the shoemaker’s elves. During the 20th century, the industrialization of shoe making caused the profession to fall from popularity. Today, many shoe makers also work in the shoe repair business.

How are Shoes Made?

The shoe-making process can be complex and time-consuming, varying depending on the type of footwear. Sandal production, for example, differs significantly from hiking boots or formal shoes, and custom-made pairs have unique specifications compared to mass-produced ones from large factories. However, some steps in the process are generally standardized. Shoemakers commonly begin with a pattern and design, including embellishments, before constructing the shoe. Creating the “last,” the essential core framework, is a common starting point. After cutting and stretching the pattern over the last, the shoe is closed and sealed. Polishing, trimming, and buffing are typically the final steps.

Design Process

In nearly all cases, the shoe manufacturing process begins with artistic and stylistic decisions made at the design table. Through a series of progressively detailed sketches, artists establish the desired appearance of the final footwear product, often including notes about materials and tools required. The design serves as a guiding “map” for manufacturers, encompassing soles, uppers, and embellishments like laces or bangles.

Forming the Last

Once a shoemaker, also known as a cobbler, possesses a pattern or plan, the process of building each pair of shoes begins. The first step is usually creating the “last,” which serves as the mold over which the shoes are shaped. Made of wood or plastic, the last significantly influences the fit, feel, and performance of the final product. Cobblers produce a variety of sizes and widths to accommodate individual customer needs.

Patterning

The shoe’s identity begins to take shape during pattern cutting, where specific parts are crafted. These include the sole, the bottom part; the insole, a layer of foam or material directly under the foot; the outsole, in direct contact with the ground; the heel, the rear bottom part that can vary in height based on design; and the upper, which secures the shoe to the foot.

Cobblers typically cut all of these parts individually, then collect them together and begin actual assembly. Precision is really important here. Missteps or poor measurements can lead to a number of different problems, both in terms of fit and wear.

Closing, Stretching, and Attaching

With all the components assembled, the shoe construction process, known as “closing,” begins. The uppers are pierced, punched, wedged, ridged, lined, and sewn together. During the “stretching” stage, the upper is stretched over the last, which is more manageable with flexible fabrics but can be challenging with stiffer materials like leather. This process requires a certain amount of force to shape the upper over the different points of the last.

In the attachment phase, the cobbler bonds the upper and sole together. This is typically achieved using cobbler’s glue or another strong adhesive, though the method may vary depending on the type of shoe. In some cases, bolts, screws, or stitches might be a better option.

Finishing

In most cases things aren’t actually done until the footwear has been “touched up” by the cobbler. Formal shoe finishing usually involves the final cutting, trimming, cleaning, and polishing that makes the product ready to hit store shelves. If the shoes are being made for a certain business or brand, they are usually tagged and boxed for distribution during this time as well.

Role of Machines

Modern cobblers often rely on various machines to aid in the manufacturing process. For mass-market footwear, the entire production can be largely automated, reducing costs and enabling manufacturers to produce and sell more pairs at lower prices.

Even high-end custom-made shoes often involve the use of machines, especially for making precise cuts, stitching through tough materials, and measuring patterns. While it is possible to craft shoes entirely by hand, this approach is usually less precise and considerably more expensive.

Oxford shoes, which were among the first men’s laced shoes, were worn in the 17th century, often by men attending a university. Unlike their predecessors, early laced shoes were cut smaller than the foot, which gave men a mincing step. They were associated with foppery, fine dressing and a particular social class. These shoes are also sometimes called Balmorals, but because they were most associated with college men, they took on the name of Oxford University. Americans wouldn’t see many of these shoes until the early 19th century, and by then, many modifications had been made.

Oxford Shoes

alt=Oxford Shoes

Today, Oxford shoes are considered men’s dress shoes that lace up. They are usually made of leather or suede, but some less expensive or vegan varieties feature non-animal hide shoes. These shoes are worn more by businessmen and less by the college set, where they would typically be considered too formal. They also fit better than did the early varieties, so men, and sometimes women, don’t have the associated problems with comfort and walking.

Oxford shoes can be quite simple, and some feature patterns, like a line across the toe or cutouts in the leather or man-made material. The more expensive shoes feature a leather sole, but most mid-price shoes have a rubber or plastic sole with about a 0.25 to a 0.5-inch (0.64 to 1.27 cm) heel. A few have a slightly higher heel, which can make the wearer appear a little taller.

These are just one of many shoe choices for businessmen or for men attending semi-dressy or formal events. Tie shoes are another option, but slip-ons like moccasins and loafers are also popular. Oxford shoes may be the first choice for extremely formal occasions, and they are often worn with tuxes or three-piece business suits. Common colors include black, dark brown, and burgundy.

Some variations of Oxford shoes have been seen over the years. The saddle shoe is quite similar, but instead of being one color, as is the case with the dressier Oxfords, they have a strip of leather in a different color across the tops of the shoes. This style were greatly popular in the 1950s for women and children, and they remain a popular shoe for children today.

Though most saddle shoes are primarily white with a black strip, some versions are tan with dark brown “saddles,” light blue with dark blue saddles, or a variety of other color combinations. The darker colors may be appropriate in business casual environments, but other combinations can be fun for non-traditional “retro-50s” attire at dance clubs and similar events.

Less formal Oxford shoes with sturdy rubbery bottoms are increasingly popular, and some styles are available in interesting colors like lime green. They may be popular with college kids for semi-dressy events since they add a little flair. Shoppers can also find a variety of shoes in this style for women, which can be available in comfortable flats or updated with heels for a more feminine look.

Throw off that pleated skirt, baggy sweater, bobby sox and loafers and grab your poodle skirt and saddle shoes, it’s time to rock and roll!

Saddle Shoes

In the post-war era of jive, jitterbug and The King, Elvis Presley, a two-toned snappy shoe replaced the respectable penny loafer. That crazy new footwear was the saddle shoes and it bunny-hopped and bee-bopped its way into popular culture.

Saddle Shoes

The classic saddle shoe is a dress-style shoe with a leather white toe box and back, and a black instep and vamp, which includes the throat, tongue and eyelets. The instep and vamp together form a shape much like a saddle in the center of the shoe, hence the name. A contrasting black strip also ran up the rear of the shoe at the back of the heel, often with a buckle at the top. The rubberized composite low-heeled sole was coral colored.

With the popularity of the saddle shoe other two-toned colors emerged, including black shoes with white saddles, white shoes with red, and tan shoes with brown. At one time or another it’s likely that nearly every conceivable color combination has found its way into the saddle shoe.

In 1957 Elvis Presley thrilled a generation in Jailhouse Rock with his ultra-cool blue eyes, sexy gyrations and deep resonate voice — and he did it in saddle shoes as well as in another up and coming shoe that would eventually replace the saddle shoe: the humble sneaker. James Dean, who died in 1955 at the age of 24, was another icon and lightening rod for youth. One of the most famous photographs of James Dean shows him standing in jeans and sneakers. With Dean and Presley both embracing this new trend it was just a matter of time before saddle shoes ended up at the back of the closet, and sneakers took their place up front.

Still, despite the more casual dress of today’s fashions, saddle shoes continue to be widely available at most department stores, bearing testament to their enduring appeal. They bring to mind an era of innocence, naivety, youth and the sounds of a generation caught between the greasers of the ’50s and the hippies of the ’60’s. Their classic look and styling has endured the changing times, and on those occasions when sneakers won’t due, saddle shoes remain a hip choice for eclectic shoe lovers everywhere. Try a pair on and see if you don’t feel the magic!

Alt=sneakers

Alt=sneakers

Keds® should not be viewed as the first company to make rubber bottomed shoes.

The word moccasins was first introduced into English in 1612, from a Virginia Algonquian language, most likely Powhatan (makasin ‘shoe’), though similar words exist in Narragansett (mokussin), Micmac (m’kusun), and Ojibwa (makasin).

The term is used in a general sense to refer to any piece of footwear made of soft leather (most often deerskin). The shoes are most often incredibly pliable and soft, allowing for hunters to walk virtually silently. Being made of leather, they also soak up liquid easily and lend good traction.

Moccasins

Specifically, the term is used to denote leather footwear worn by many native tribes of North America. Many moccasins are decorated with beads, shells, or other adornments, depending on the tribe and particular use.

In the western plains and desert, moccasins were usually hard soled to protect their wearer’s feet from sharp rocks and cacti. The Apache moccasin include a toe that is turned up to prevent thorns or slender rocks from entering the seam and stabbing the foot.

Other regional variations include decorative tongues amongst many tribes of the south-west, bits of leather hanging from the heel to eliminate footprints, and tiny tails that dragged behind the moccasin.

The actual pattern used for the moccasin is so distinctive that often a wearer’s tribe can be determined simply by examining the shape of the footprint: the Iroquois moccasin are wide on the bottom, while most eastern forest tribes are very thin; tribes of the Great Lakes often use rabbit-nose shaped toes, while in the plains the toes are much more flat.

Finally, the decoration of moccasins differs greatly depending on purpose and tribe. Many hunting moccasins are completely unadorned, consisting solely of a single piece of leather wrapped around the foot. Marriage moccasins among most tribes, on the other hand, are beaded entirely on the top. Many Plains tribes prepared special moccasins for the journey into the afterlife, and these moccasins are decorated with beads not only on the top and sides, but also on the soles.

Patterns can include floral patterns, geometric shapes, religious and spiritual symbols, and zoomorphic designs. Occasionally other materials, such as velvet, are added to the cuffs of the moccasin to lend particular distinction.

Many modern moccasin producers have sprung up in the past thirty years, boasting styles ranging from traditional tribal designs to Native American inspired ‘Celtic’ or ‘Australian’ moccasins.

Suede Brush are handy cleaning devices that help to keep a variety of suede clothing and accessories looking fresh and new. Equipped with a combination of soft and metal bristles, a brush can be used to revive the short nap on suede material while also helping to deal with surface stains. Many brushes are inexpensive, making it easy to keep several different sizes on hand for different projects.

These brushes traditionally have a long wooden handle, and a body that is composed of a solid wood base and a series of bristles. Usually, the brush will include two types of bristles. Metal bristles are located in the interior section of brush design, while softer bristles surround the perimeter. Horsehair is often used as the medium for the soft bristles. This combination of hard and soft bristles allows the suede brush to firmly deal with raising the nap and dislodging foreign substances, while still gently massaging the material.

Alt=Suede Brush

Several variations on the traditional suede brush are available today. One popular model configures the handle to also double as a shoehorn, which allows the device to easily provide double duty. As an additional advantage, the rubber head included on the shoe horn end of many models also serves as an excellent buffing agent for welts on the suede material.

One popular option for cleaning suede is kits that combine a cleaning agent with a brush, all in one unit. Typically, the cleaner is sprayed onto the suede item and allowed to set for a few moments. With the small brush situated on the top cap for the cleaner, the kits help to make it easy to keep the cleaner and the brush in a small case with suede shoes or gloves. Often, the brush included with these kits will be constructed of plastic bristles rather than a metal and horsehair combination.

Other gentle cleaning agents can be used with the suede brush, in professional cleaner is not available, but it is a good idea for individuals to read the cleaning instructions that come with the suede item, as different manufactures use a variety of treatments on the material that may negatively interact with different cleaning agents. People should always follow the manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and caring for suede, or they run the risk of permanently discoloring or otherwise damaging the texture of the item.

Commonly used to make boots, gloves and other fashion accessories, suede is a kind of leather with a smooth, velvet-like surface. The term was originally used in France to indicate a particular type of soft gloves imported from Sweden. Over time, the word came to refer to any leather material with a smooth nap finish.

Leather is manufactured from the skins of animals, generally cows. Once the skin has been removed from the animal, it is tanned in order to produce a supple, durable material that is used for a number of applications, such as manufacturing clothing and upholstering furniture. Leather that has not been sanded or split in any way is known as full-grain leather. Full-grain leather is usually manufactured from only the best, undamaged hides. As a result, it is the most expensive as well as the most durable of leathers.

When manufacturers seek to produce more material out of a single hide, the leather can be separated into two or more layers, or splits. These include the grain split, which is the outer surface of the hide, and the flesh split, or inner surface. In very thick hides, one or more middle splits may also be produced.

Alt=Suede

Generally, suede is created from either the inner split or the flesh split of a piece of leather. Because it comes from a thinner piece of hide, suede is less durable than full-grain leather. The nappy texture of the material also makes it more susceptible to damage from water and stains. However, because several pieces of suede can be produced from a single hide, it is also much less expensive than full-grain leather.

Although most suede is made from a split hide, it is also possible to produce suede from a full-grain piece of leather. The nappy finish can be achieved by abrading the surface of the leather, usually with an emery wheel. Suede that is manufactured from full-grain leather may also be called nubuck. Full-grain suede is usually more durable than the split-hide variety, but also more expensive.

A more durable and cheaper alternative to suede can be manufactured from synthetic materials. Unlike natural suede, the synthetic version is stain-resistant and not susceptible to water damage. Because of this, synthetic suede is frequently used to upholster furniture or other items that may need to sustain a lot of wear-and-tear.

The best way to clean suede is to use a dry sponge or a suede brush to remove dust and dirt. Suede footwear can also be protected with a silicon spray, which will prevent water damage and soil build-up. After the spray has been applied, the nap can be restored with sandpaper or an emery board.

Nubuck is a type of leather with a soft, velvety surface and is some of the most expensive leather to purchase. Unlike the less expensive suede, this type of leather is far more durable and is excellent for use on items like furniture because it will last much longer than suede. It is subject to the same kind of easy staining that occurs with suede and often requires pre-treatment or stain resistant protection to extend its life.

Alt=Nubuck

It’s easy to get confused about whether a leather item is nubuck or suede since both look and feel similar. Both types of leather are sanded to produce the velvet soft feel that is so desirable. The main difference is that nubuck is sanded on the outer surface of the leather, essentially the part that would have been the exterior skin of the animal, while suede is sanded on the inner layer of the skin.

Since the outside layer of a skin is much tougher, nubuck lasts much longer and responds very well to this sanding process. It does show imperfections in the exterior layer of the skin much more easily, and is often treated with dyes, sometimes simply clear ones, to disguise any significant flaws. The sanding process can create further imperfections when not done correctly, so nubuck may be color-treated to hide these too.
You will find nubuck used in a variety of applications. Furniture made with this material is highly desirable, but will come at a much more expensive price than furniture made from lower grade types of leather. Nubuck shoes and purses are popular, as is clothing. Some companies prefer to use it instead of suede so that a product will last longer. For example, the  classic sandal is made from nubuck instead of suede. The company chose this particular leather because it is so much stronger than suede and will wear well with time.

Naturally, all nubuck is subject to significant staining and requires proper care even when it is stain treated. Unlike flat leather, you can’t use shoe polish on this material because of its nap. Instead, many leather manufacturers suggest one way to keep it from getting permanent stains is to use a brush on the leather regularly to remove any small dust particles. If you have furniture made of nubuck, you should additionally vacuum the furniture about once a week to remove dust.

If you do spill liquids on nubuck, it’s important to use cotton cloths to try to soak up as much of the spill as possible. You can buy special leather cleaners that are approved for the material that can help remove oily stains. Most cleaners suggest not allowing the stain to dry since it is much harder to remove a stain on nubuck after it has fully dried. Generally the older the stain, the more difficult it is to remove.

The easy stain properties of nubuck should be a consideration when you make a purchase. The material may be perfect for the home where adults are quite careful when they sit on the furniture. The expense may not be worth it, on the other hand, if you have young children or animals that like to leap onto furniture.

Knowing your shoe width is important when purchasing new shoes. To determine your shoe width, you will need to measure your foot with a pen and paper. Once you measure your foot, a size chart can help you determine your shoe width for any given pair of shoes.

Part1

Measuring Your Foot

1

Place your foot on a piece of paper while seated. Sit down with your back straight on a chair. Take a piece of paper big enough for your whole foot to fit on. Place your foot flat on the paper.

  • If you intend to wear socks with the shoe you’re buying, wear those socks while measuring your foot.

2

Trace your foot. With a pen or pencil, trace the outline of your foot. Keep the pen or pencil as close to your foot as possible. This will help ensure an accurate measurement.

  • You’ll get the most accurate measurement if you have someone else trace your foot while you remain seated upright, but it’s okay to do it yourself.

3

Repeat with the other foot. After you finish measuring your first foot, do the exact same process with the second foot. Feet are usually slightly different in size, so you’ll be picking shoes with your larger foot in mind.

4

Measure the width between the widest points of your foot. Identify the areas on your feet with the largest width. Take a tape measure or ruler to measure both widths.

5

Subtract to find your shoe width. The first measurements will not be entirely accurate. The pencil will have created a small amount of space, making your measurements slightly larger than your actual feet. To determine your most accurate foot width, subtract 5 millimeters or 1/5 of an inch from each measurement.

Part2

Determining Your Shoe Size

1

Measure your foot length. Shoe width varies by shoe size. To determine shoe width, measure the distance between the longest part of each foot. Then, subtract 5 millimeters or 1/5 of an inch.

2

Identify your shoe size. With a simple internet search, you can find a general size chart for shoe size. Match the length of your foot with the corresponding shoe size. But also take note that there are different size charts based on gender.

  • For example, a foot around 8.5 (21.6 centimeters) inches would be a size 5 in women’s based on US sizes. In European countries, the measurement 8.5 would be a 35 or 36.

3

Figure out your width based on that size. The size chart should indicate your width based on your shoe size. After identifying your shoe size, look back to the width measurements of your bigger foot. Figure out what the width would be for your shoe size based on that measurement.

  • For example, a woman with size 5 shoes with a shoe width around four inches (10.16 centimeters) would require an extra wide shoe. In stores, extra wide shoes are normally labeled as “E.”

4

Use specific sizing charts when possible. Every sizing chart is different and some company’s shoes may run slightly smaller or larger than average. When buying shoes, see if the manufacturer has a specific sizing chart before assuming your shoe size based on a general chart. This will help increase the likelihood shoes will fit properly, especially if you’re making purchases online.

Part3

Ensuring Accuracy

1

Measure your feet at the end of the day. The size of your feet fluctuate throughout the day. Feet tend to get bigger at night due to swelling. Measure your feet at night to make sure your shoe will fit throughout the course of a day.

2

Measure while wearing the socks you’ll use with your shoes. If you’re going to typically wear socks with your shoes, put your socks on before measuring your feet. For example, running or gym shoes are typically worn with socks, so put on your normal workout socks when measuring your feet.

  • Some shoes, like sandals and some flats, usually are not worn with socks. In this case, it’s unnecessary to wear socks while measuring your shoes.

3

Try shoes on prior to purchase. Shoe size and width can help you find shoes with a higher chance of fitting. However, even if the measurements are correct, things like the shape of your feet can affect how a shoe fits. It’s always better to try shoes on prior to purchase.

  • If you do order shoes online, make sure it’s from a company that allows you to return them for a full refund if they don’t fit.

4

Buy shoes that will fit your largest foot. One foot is usually a little bigger than the other. Use this foot’s measurements to determine your shoe’s widths. This way, your shoes will fit comfortably on both feet.

Shoe sizes are measured very different around the world, which makes buying shoes in different country a bit difficult. Luckily, some simple adding and subtracting can help you find your correct size right in the store. If you have more time, you can try looking up a conversion chart. Either way, you’ll be able to find your size with ease and ensure that your shoes fit you just right!

Method1

Calculating Women’s Sizes

1

Use the US size when buying Canadian shoes. US and Canadian shoe sizes are transformable in both men’s and women’s, so you won’t have to do a conversion to switch back and forth. This also means that you can use the Canadian size when doing conversions, since it’s the same as the US size.

  • If you wear a US women’s size 8, for example, you’d wear a size 8 in Canadian women’s as well.

2

Convert from US women’s to men’s sizes by subtracting 1.5. Although exact sizes are different between various shoe brands, US women’s shoes should be smaller than men’s by about 1.5 sizes. This means that if a women’s shoe has the same length and width as a men’s shoe, the women’s size will be 1.5 more than the men’s. You can subtract 1.5 from a women’s size to get the men’s equivalent, or add 1.5 sizes to a men’s size to convert to women’s.

  • For example, if you wear a women’s 9, you’ll wear a 7.5 of men’s.
  • If you wear a men’s 10, you’ll wear a women’s 11.5.

3

Convert from a women’s US size to an EU size by adding 30 or 30.5. EU sizes don’t have half size, so if your US size is a whole number, you’ll add 30 to get your EU size. If your US size is a half size, you’ll add 30.5.

  • For example, if US women’s size is 7.5, you’d add 30.5 to get your EU size of 38.
  • If your US size is 7, add 30 to get your EU size 37.
  • To go from an EU women’s size to a US women’s size, subtract 30 and try a shoe in that size. Then try the same shoe in a half size smaller and choose whichever one feels best to you.

4

Go from a US women’s to a UK women’s size by subtracting 2. If you’re starting with a US women’s size, simply subtract 2 to get your size in UK women’s shoes. If you want to know your US women’s size, add 2 to your UK size.

  • For example, if your US women’s size is 6, you would be size 4 in UK sizes.

5

Get your Australian shoe size by subtracting 2.5 from your US size. If you want to know women’s shoes size of Australia, simply subtract 2.5 from US women’s size. If you need to convert an Australian women’s size to American, add 2.5.

  • For example, if a US size 9, you would need an 11.5 in Australian shoes.

6

Add 16 to your US women’s size to get your Japanese size. Japanese sizes are actually measured in centimeters, but if you don’t want to measure your foot with a ruler, you can simply add 16 to your US women’s size. When converting from Japanese to US women’s sizes, subtract 16.

  • For example, if you wear a size 8 in US women’s shoes, you’d wear a size 24 in Japanese women’s shoes.

7

Get your Asian women’s shoe size by adding 16.5 to US size. Other Asian countries besides Japan use a different measuring way. These sizes a little different and the conversion might not be accurately, but you can approximate your size by adding 16.5 to your US women’s shoe size.

  • For example, if you wear a 10 in US women’s shoes, your Asian women’s shoe size would be about 26.5.
  • This size method is used in China and Hong Kong, and some other countries.

8

Combine conversions as necessary. Depending on what region your known shoe size is from, you may have to do a couple quick conversions to get to your desired size. Write the calculations with a pencil and a slip of paper, or use a calculator for an easier approach.

  • For example, if your UK women’s shoe size is 6 and you want to get your Australian size, you could add 2 to find your US size, an 8, then subtract 2.5 to get to your Australian size, size 5.5.
  • If your EU shoe size is 38 and you want to get your Japanese size, you would subtract 30 to get your US size, an 8, then add 16 to get your Japanese size, size 24.

Method2

Calculating Men’s Sizes

1

Use your US size when buying Canadian shoes. Good news: US and Canadian shoe sizes are interchangeable in both men’s and women’s, so no conversion is needed to switch back and forth. You can also use your Canadian size when doing conversions to other regions, since it’s the same as your US size.

  • For example, if you wear a US men’s size 10, you’d wear a size 10 in Canadian men’s as well.

2

Convert from US men’s to women’s by adding 1.5. Although exact sizes differ between shoe brands, US men’s shoes are typically larger than women’s by about 1.5 sizes. This means that if a men’s shoe has the same length and width as a women’s shoe, the men’s size will be 1.5 less than the women’s. You can subtract 1.5 from a women’s size to get the men’s size, or add 1.5 sizes to a men’s size to convert to women’s.

  • For example, if you wear a men’s 10, you should wear a women’s 11.5.
  • If you wear a women’s 9, you should wear a 7.5 in men’s.

3

Convert from a US men’s size to an EU size by adding 32.5 or 33. Since there are no half sizes in European shoes, you have to convert a men’s shoe size differently depending on your US size. If you wear a half size in US shoes, add 32.5 to get your EU size. If you wear a whole size in US shoes, add 33 to get your EU size.

  • For example, if you’re an 11.5 in US men’s shoes, you’ll be a 34 in EU shoes.
  • If you’re going from an EU men’s size to a US men’s size, subtract 33 and try on a shoe in that size. Then try the same shoe in a half size smaller and choose whichever one feels best to you.

4

Get a men’s UK or Australian size by subtracting 0.5 from your US size. In men’s shoes, UK and Australian sizes are equivalent. You can subtract a half size from your US men’s size to get your size in UK and Australian shoes, or add a half size if you’re going the other way.

  • For example, if you wear a 13 in US men’s shoes, you’d be a 12.5 in UK and Australian men’s shoes.

5

Find a Japanese men’s shoe size by adding 18.5 to your US size. Japanese sizes are measured in centimeters, but you can find yours without measuring your foot by simply adding 18.5 to your US size. To determine your US men’s shoe size from your Japanese size, subtract 18.5 instead.

  • If you wear a size 9 in US men’s shoes, for example, you’d wear a 27.5 in Japanese men’s.

6

Estimate your Asian men’s shoe size by adding 17.5 to your US size. Asian shoe sizes, used in areas of the continent other than Japan, such as China and Hong Kong, vary more and are harder to exactly determine. You can approximate your Asian men’s shoe size by adding 17.5 to your US shoe size, but it’s best to try the shoes on beforehand to make sure that they fit.

  • If you wear a US men’s size 8, for example, your Asian men’s size will be around a 25.5.

7

Combine conversions if you have to. A few quick conversions can help you find your shoe size no matter what region your known size is from. Simply convert your size to US size, then use the conversion rules to calculate your size in the desired region. You can use a calculator or write out the calculations on a piece of paper to keep track of them.

  • For example, if your UK men’s shoe size is a 9.5 and you want to get your EU size, you could add 0.5 to find your US size, 10, then add 33 to get to your EU size, 43.
  • If your EU size is a 46 and you want to estimate your Asian size, you would subtract 33 to get your US size,13, then add 17.5 to find your size in Asian men’s shoes, about 30.5.

Method3

Consulting a Size Conversion Chart

1

Use a size chart from your desired brand for the most accuracy. A shoe size conversion chart is a table that shows shoe sizes from multiple countries, arranged so that all equivalent sizes are right in line with each other. Some larger shoe brands have their own conversion charts, so you can know exactly what size will fit you best. To find one, go online and search for “shoe size conversion chart,” including the name brand you’re looking for.

  • For example, your search could be, “shoe size conversion chart men’s Nikes.”

2

Consult a general conversion chart for convenient, close estimates. If your desired shoe brand doesn’t offer a sizing chart, look up a general one online. Search for “shoe size conversion chart” and click on one that contains both your current and desired region.

  • For more precise results, you can include the names of both regions in your search. You could type, for example, “shoe size conversion chart women’s UK EU.”

3

Find your regular shoe size or foot length in the chart. First, make sure that you’re looking at the chart for the correct gender. Then, look through the columns to find the region of your known shoe size. Then, simply scroll down that column until you find your shoe size.

  • For example, if you know that you’re a size 39 in EU women’s, find the EU column in the women’s chart, then look down the list until you find size 39.

4

Look at the size equivalents in other columns. To find your new size, simply check  across the columns until you find your desired region. The size listed there will be your size in that region.

  • For example, if you know you’re an EU women’s size 39, follow that horizontal row across until you get to the UK column. The size you see there, 6, is your UK women’s shoe size.

Tips

  • If you don’t know your shoe size yet, you can find it by standing and tracing around your foot on a piece of plain paper. Use a ruler or a tape measure to measure the distance from the center of your heel to the tip of your toe. Write down the measurement in inches or centimeters and use a size chart to match the measurement to a size from any region.
